Day 1 – London – Darlington
We meet our Tour Director early this morning at the Thistle Marble Arch and drive north to the university town of Cambridge. We stroll by some of the colleges, including the magnificent King's College, before continuing to historic York. Here, inside the ancient city walls, we walk through narrow cobbled streets, to the Tudor 'Shambles' and we see York Minster, England's largest medieval cathedral. Then some free time before we continue to our hotel. Hotel: Blackwell Grange. (D)
Day 2 – Darlington – Edinburgh
It's away to Scotland today, across the wild Northumberland Moors and past the romantic ruins of Jedburgh Abbey, to reach Scotland's elegant capital of Edinburgh. On our guided city tour we visit the castle, set high on a rocky crag, and home to the 'Honours of Scotland' (the Scottish Crown Jewels). Then we drive down the stately Royal Mile, past St Giles' Cathedral, to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, official residence of the Queen. Now we cross over to Princes Street and continue past the Scott Monument, to tour the Georgian squares of the 'New Town'. Tonight, why not enjoy an optional Scottish night out, with haggis and the sound of bagpipes? (May-Oct only) Hotel: Royal Terrace. (B)

Leaving Edinburgh this morning, we drive through the Southern Uplands to stop at Moffat woollen mills. Then we drive back across the border into the delightful Lake District scenery so beautiful it inspired a host of English poets. We have time to wander like Wordsworth by the lakeside, before reaching our hotel in the Roman city of Chester. Hotel: Blossoms. (B,D)
Day 4 – Chester – London
This morning we see Chester's uniqueblack and white 'Rows' (shopping arcades) and the town walls which encircle them, once manned by Roman legionnaires. We also see the remains of the Roman Amphitheatre. Next stop is at the world-famous Wedgwood China factory. Further south, we arrive in Stratford-upon-Avon, home of William Shakespeare, where we visit the Bard's half timbered birthplace. From Stratford we travel, as he often did, through the golden-stone flower-decked villages of the Cotswolds, thought by many to be one of the most beautiful parts of England. Early this evening we return to London where our memorable tour ends. (B)
